The candidates
Williams is a former professional baseball player. After he retired, he became a fundraiser for then-Gov. George W. Bush.
He worked as the North Texas chairman for Bush’s presidential campaigns in 2000 and 2004, later becoming the campaign’s national grassroots fundraising chairman in 2004. Additionally, Williams was appointed by Gov. Rick Perry in 2004 to become Texas’ Secretary of State, a position he held until 2007.
Wiliams, elected in 2012, is the first Republican to represent the 25th District since its creation in 1983. In Congress, he serves on the House Committee on Financial Services.
Oliver, Williams’ challenger, spent much of her career in the healthcare industry working on healthcare finance and taxation, and recently served on Austin City Council’s Board of Central Health. Her campaign platform is centered around implementing a Medicare for All universal healthcare systen, criminal justice reform, including abolishing for-profit prisons, and expanding voting rights.
